DESIGNATED FELONIES

Defending Georgia Teens in Designated Felonies

Growing up is hard to do, but if you or a family member are in trouble with the law, times may be especially difficult. For a teen, being convicted of a designated felony can ruin future school or employment opportunities. For a parent whose child is facing charges of a juvenile felony, you may be worried about your child being removed from your care.

At the Juvenile Law Group, we work with teens and their parents throughout Atlanta, Georgia, and the surrounding areas to defend clients who are facing charges of a designated felony. Our lawyers work closely with clients, helping them understand the choices that are available and the possible ramifications of each option. What Is a Designated Juvenile Felony?

A designated felony is a crime which would be considered criminal if it was committed by an older person. There are a wide range of juvenile felonies, including:

  • Drug trafficking
  • Kidnapping
  • Aggravated assault if the victim is a teacher
  • Third burglary
  • Gang activity
  • Fourth felony in general
  • Attempted murder
  • Arson
  • Hijacking a motor vehicle

Consequences for Designated Felonies

Unlike non-designated juvenile felonies, the penalties for a designated felony can be severe. While the most time a non-designated felon could be sentenced to is 30 days, juveniles who commit designated felonies face more severe consequences.

A designated juvenile felony can include one to five years in a youth development center (YDC). There can also be charges of straight commitment in which the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) decides when the teen is eligible for leaving.

At the Juvenile Law Group, fighting designated felony charges or getting them reduced is our highest priority. We work closely with teens, their parents and the law officers to facilitate communication which keeps everyone on the same page.
